Commitment for Life
Working for justice and peace in the world
Commitment for Life exists to help United Reformed Churches work for a fairer world and for peace with justice, recognising that change and response starts with each one of us. It is an integral part of the Church and Society programme for social justice.
Working with Christian Aid and the World Development Movement (WDM) we seek to use our influence to ensure that global policies work to the benefit of the poor - "speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves." (Proverbs 31:8-9).
The issues we take up include Fairtrade and Trade Justice, poverty elimination (achieving the Millennium Development Goals), recognising that global inequality also impacts on our own communities in the UK. Other issues we address are the struggle for peace and justice in Israel/Palestine, HIV/Aids, and environmental sustainability.
Giving money to Commitment for Life is not about charity, it is about justice. Through your generosity, Christian Aid helps partners in their struggle for justice and long-term development in their own countries, as well as campaigning on debt and trade justice.

The United Reformed Church has always taken seriously its global responsibility. Belonging to the World of Church and Commitment for Life represent the outworking of this as together we engage with global issues in partnership with the Council for World Mission, Christian Aid and the World Development Movement. In a globalised world every church is asked to play its part in tackling the structures that keep people poor, in challenging inequality and injustice.
With the Vision Statement of January 2004 we can say that the United Reformed Church places an even higher priority on the gospel call for freedom and justice for everyone. This echoes Jesus' own mission to "bring good news to the poor, liberation to the oppressed" and to usher in the kingdom of God and God's justice. Time and again God selects the weak and the powerless to receive blessings and fulfil God's purposes.
